Taro Kono, Japan’s new Digital Minister, tweeted that floppy disks, CDs as well as MiniDiscs are still required for close to 1,900 government-related procedures.
Out with the Floppy
The minister expressed a desire to finally stop such use and actually make the floppy tech obsolete. This is his bid to ensure that Japan learns to handle applications in other forms. Koyo says that the country’s Prime Minister, Mr. Fumio Kishida also backs his thoughts. Bloomberg viewed a press conference around the statements.
Koyo on a Mission
Koyo had earlier targeted fax machines and hanko stamps. He believes older tech only brings in delays and cramps the system. He had stated, “I’m looking to get rid of the fax machine, and I still plan to do that.” Even Sony, a leading manufacturer of floppy disks officially halted production around 11 years back. In an era of cloud and USBs, floppy does sound sloppy.
An end note
While USA’s Department of Defense, adapts to latest tech slowly, it has phased floppies out back in 2019. Now Japan needs to catch up real soon. Once a storage darling, the floppy is barely snug enough to handle those huge strings of data that the current age gets to see.
