What exactly is Nearby Share?

Google’s Nearby Share is a simple and quick way to send files between two Android devices. The Android Nearby Share works when you are in close proximity with the other person and would like to send files across. The Nearby Share works via Bluetooth connection to create a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi network between two devices.  It doesn’t use the internet to share files and even works when you are offline. However, to use Android Nearby Share to its full capacity, you will have to keep your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on when sharing files. Also, you can chose to stay “hidden” or  visible to “some contacts” or visible to “all contacts,” thus ensuring no unnecessary files are circulated without your permission.

Is the Nearby Share Feature Available for Every Android User?

Nearby Share works on devices with Android 6.0 or higher.The feature is still under the testing phase and currently has been made available for selected  Google Pixel and Samsung smartphones.

Where to Find the WhatsApp Nearby Share Feature

Follow the following steps to use Android Nearby Share feature to its full advantage:

Go to your Android phone’s SettingsScroll down to GoogleTap on Device connections and you will see Nearby Share.Whenever you want to send videos or photos to a person next to you, open the file and tap on the share icon. You will notice Nearby Share.Choose the device you wish to send the file, tap on contact and then tap send. Remember that you can use Nearby Share only with people in your contacts list.

Once you selected the receiver, a notification is sent with the option to either accept or decline the file. Nearby Share then automatically chooses the best protocol for fast and easy sharing using Bluetooth, The advantage of using Android Nearby is that it only allows users to send files to contacts who have verified their Google Account with a phone number, thus ensuring the data is not stolen or taken undue advantage of.
